The Philosophy Cabinet**
announces
a
philosophical dinner
on
“Beliefs” Thursday,
Jan. 20
Last month’s café philo
discussion : Can we ever really justify our beliefs ? brought up some basic
philosophical issues concerning the role of beliefs in our lives. What constitutes a belief and how does it influence our existence ? What are our judgments based upon :
beliefs or reason ? Are beliefs
relegated to faith ? Do they have a role in knowledge? Are they to be considered as ‘opinions’
the Greeks called ‘Doxa’ representing the general opinion which tends to hide
and distort the truth. What does it mean to believe in something ? What is this
belief grounded in ?

“LEARNING
AND PHILOSOPHY”, Thurs. Feb.
3
Learning and
philosophy are intimately related not only within the philosophy of education,
but also in the areas of science,
culture, psychology, cognitive sciences, anthropology, history… and our
relationship in general to both knowledge and the process of socialisation. In
western philosophy the debate starting with Plato and Aristotle on whether
learning is the acquisition of knowledge, which develops into teaching models
of transmission,(Thomas Aquinas, Descartes) or learning being inquiry and the
creation of meaning which develops into humanistic and experiential models
(Locke, Rousseau, Dewey). This debate leads to both cultural and scientific
divides in both education and wider areas of perception, memory, and the
relationship of the brain to learning. In the 20th century
Humanistic psychology, Behaviourist, Cognitive and Constructivist models of pedagogy have developed and
attempted to explain the process of learning…. The debate continues
