The nature and importance of truth is one of the big questions in the history of philosophy. What do we mean by the word “truth”, and to what extent should we pursue the truth at any price? In particular, what is the relation between truth and happiness? Can one be too honest? When, if ever, is it acceptable to lie? Is it true, as La Rochefoucauld claimed, that, “Men could not continue to live in society if they did not deceive one another”? Should we distinguish between honesty and integrity? If so, wherein lies the difference? |
