The Philosophy Cabinet**
announces
a
philosophical dinner
on
“Authenticity”, Thurs. June 9
Authenticity has become the
measure for us between our personal nature and our socialized identity. Philosophically, this term finds its
roots in Heidegger’s Being and Time, in which the search for one’s authenticity
in an inauthentic world is part of our ontological struggle. Charles Taylor in The Ethics of
Authenticity, elaborates this notion and proposes it as the foundation of
ethical behavior and/or an ethical system. We’ve often heard the expressions :
‘Be yourself’, ‘Be natural’,
find the authentic you and yet we’re not quite sure of what that means. If we get to know ourselves through
others, how much are we ourselves or the expectations/projections of others or
the ‘generalized’ other. Is it
possible to be authentic when we’re born into a society already established
? Is it a dialectic between the
innate and acquired (nature/nurture)?

Dreams & illusions are often representations of reality, though relegated to a less important level than that of rational thinking. What are their impact on ‘rational thinking ? Where do they draw their sources from ? Are they expressions of our unconscious ? Is rationality linked to consciousness and irrationality (in terms of dreams and illusions) linked to unconsciousness ? Is there a collective unconscious that structures these dreams and/or illusions ? And lastly, how do dreams & illusions affect us in our daily lives ? These are some of the questions we’ll be looking at more closely.
